Vermont Place Names

The information that follows has been taken from two different sources: Vermont Place Names - Footprints in History, authored by Esther Munroe Swift and from the Center for Rural Studies at the University of Vermont.

We have attempted to provide a short reference guide to be used when looking for a specific place in Vermont. What follows is an alphabetical listing of Real Vermont Places, including towns, villages, gores and others.

You may also access the Center for Rural Studies website for more detail on these real and imagined places in Vermont. Their information was created by Fred Schmidt, Director, and is stated as being the beginnings of a list of "Fictitious Places" in Vermont. Most come from books, poems, and even films. We know that there are many more than we have listed.

The Office of the Vermont Secretary of State now has this information available through our web site in Adobe Acrobat format (Vermont Place Names). It requires Acrobat 4.0 Reader or higher to read it. If you do not have an appropriate version of Acrobat, you can go to the following site to get a free download:

'Get Acrobat Reader' www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html.
