How To Conduct A
Voter Registration Drive
To organize your voter registration drive:
· Set up a time and place for the drive: Voter Registration Drives work well at large public events with lots of people such as music and art festivals, parades, community events, etc. Arrange to have a table and a video player available (if an electrical outlet is close by) for the drive.
· Get Voter Registration Forms: Call 1-800439-VOTE or e-mail govote@sec.state.vt.us to order voter registration forms, or contact your localtown clerk.
· Order Buttons, Stickers, Flyers and Video: Call 1-800-439-VOTE or e-mail govote@sec.state.vt.us to order “Your Vote is Your Voice” buttons and bumper stickers. We have flyers announcing Voter Registration Drives. We also have a 7 minute video available to illustrate to first time voters what to expect at the polls.
· Make sure you have all other necessary supplies: Pens, clipboards and volunteers. Don’t be shy – have some volunteers standing with clipboards and registration forms in-hand, ready to ask passers-by if they are registered to vote.
· Find a Notary to help out. Vermont voter registration forms must be notarized. To ensure you have a notary at your drive you can
ü Become a notary – If you are 18 years old you can become a notary by filling out a form at the Superior Court in your county and returning it with a fee of $20.
ü Ask your Town Clerk – Many Town Clerks in your area would be happy to help you identify a Justice of the Peace who might be willing to help in your registration drive by notarizing registration forms. Click here to locate your Town Clerk
· Assist voters in filling out the voter application to the checklist. The Voter Registration Deadline is 5 p.m. on September 3rd for the September 9th Primary Election and 5 p.m. on October 29th for the November 4th General Election. The Voter must include his or her Vermont Driver's License Number. If a person does not have a Vermont Driver's License Number, he or she must include the last four digits of their Social Security Number.
Step 2: Get the word out!
There are many ways to get the word out. You can use our voter registration posters or design your own. Click here to download and print our voter registration posters! Many local radio stations will run free public service announcements, and you can ask governmental, civic and religious organizations to announce the drive in their bulletins and at their meetings. Also, be sure to set up in a prominent location!
Step 3: Have Fun!
You are helping the citizens of Vermont fulfill one of their most important civic responsibilities – feel good about what you are doing!
Step 4: After the Drive
Completed registration forms must be returned to the town clerk where the applicant lives before the filing deadline for the next election. Click here for contact information for all town clerks.
