The Vermont State Archives consists of records that have continuing value to the State of Vermont and its citizens. The records document the rights of citizens, the decisions of government, and the history of the state from its establishment in 1777 to the present.
The public is invited to conduct research in the archives: we welcome your visits, emails, and telephone calls. We are available to answer your reference inquiries, to suggest helpful resources, and to assist you with navigating the records. Within our website, the “Find Records” page contains finding aids, indexes, and databases to help you identify relevant records. More detailed information about popular research topics, such as genealogy or legislative research, can be found in our “Research Guides.”
Extensive information on the history of Vermont state government can be found in the “Government History” section. A selection of online exhibits that feature records in the State Archives is also available.
In Summer 2015, we launched our newsletter, Keeping Appraised, containing information about Vermont's archival public records. The newsletter is issued quarterly to researchers and interested members of the public.
