          MARK B. MITCHELL           


MARK B. MITCHELL of Barnard, Windsor County, Democrat, was born in London, England in 1934, lived in Ireland during WW2 , came to US in 1946; Connecticut; Hawaii; Massachusetts; and, Vermont, since 1986. Educated at Portsmouth Abbey (Benedictine) School, 1952; Dartmouth College, AB, 1956; Harvard University, Graduate School of Design, M Arch, 1962. Registered Architect current: Vermont; previously: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, and National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. US Army 1956 -1958, honorable discharge as sergeant. Honors: National VITA Honor Award for Jonathan Kozol's Storefront Learning Center ; honorable mention, Venice Biennale architectural design competition, 2001; First Place and commission: Recreation Center, Massachusetts Hospital School, Canton, MA. Many in my family are dyslexic. I have worked to find the best educational opportunities and solutions for each us. My wife is a teacher educator at Vermont College, and we are pleased that education, particularly in Vermont, has made great progress in the last 35 years in understanding learning differences. My architectural practice has included design and planning for universities, colleges and libraries. My major work in the Upper Valley has been planning the expansion of the Baker Library at Dartmouth and the renovation of the Norman Williams Public Library in Woodstock. Memberships. Past: President, Nuuani (Hawaii) Elementary School PTA; President, Nuuanu Valley Community Association; President, Hill House (Beacon Hill's settlement house); founding trustee, Fayerweather Street School, Cambridge, MA; and, Windsor County Courthouse Advisory Committee.
