RICHARD W. SEARS, JR. of Bennington, Bennington County, Democrat, was born in Framingham, Massachusetts, on April 22, 1943, and became a resident of Bennington in 1971. Occupation: He has worked in residential programs for troubled youth for over 30 years. He was educated in schools in Ashland, Massachusetts; New Hampton School, New Hampton, New Hampshire; University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont (B.A., 1969). He is married to the former Beverly Bushey. Member of: Bennington Select Board, 1987-93, chairman for four years; Catamount Rotary Club; Elks Lodge #567.   MARK SHEPARD


     

MARK SHEPARD of Bennington, Bennington County, Republican, was born September 12, 1960, in Windsor, Vermont. Mark was raised on a multigenerational family farm in Hartland. Mark graduated from Hartford High School (1978). Mark earned his Journeyman Electrician's license (1982) following four years in the Vermont Electrical Apprenticeship Program. Mark was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, with high honors from the University of Florida (1986). While working as an engineer, Mark continued his engineering studies, at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was awarded a Master of Engineering Degree in Electrical Engineering, with emphasis on Robotics and Automation (1994). Mark operates a business (he founded in 1993) designing, building and programming control systems for the industrial automation market. In 1994, Mark and his wife, Rebecca, moved to Bennington, where Rebecca had been Bennington's elementary band director since 1991. They have four sons, ages seven and under. Mark helped create the Bennington Area Habitat For Humanity, serving on the Board of Directors and chairing the Family Nurture Committee.
